Ellipsoidals (Ellipsoidal Reflector
Spotlights or ERS) are speified by the measurement of the lens size
and focal length (19°, 6 x ?, 3 1/2 x ?, mini, etc.) and are available
in fixed or zoom focus. Commonly called "Leko," profile pattern unit,
or spotlight, these units are designed with an ellipsoid-shaped reflector,
front condensing lens(es) and framing shutters. Front lens(es) are
mounted in a moveable "barrel" which allows the focus to
be changed from sharp to soft. Fixed focus barrels are removable
to ease design changes. Zoom units have an adjustable beam spread,
while fixed focus units do not.
Ellipsoidals are used in applications where a great deal of control
is needed over what is lit by the fixture and the shape and sharpness
of the beam, with their primary specialty being pattern projecton.
Most ellipsoidals have dual "gel slots" to accommodate
accessories (gel extenders, top hats, donuts, etc.) and also a separate
slot to hold an iris, gobo rotator, or other motion effects units.
Please note that these fixtures can be used with a variety of motion
effects devices to create exciting visual effects. Accessories are
available for some ellipsoidals to facilitate their use as a followspot.
